In recent years many social networking websites, such as Myspace and Facebook, have become increasingly popular. Often overlooked are the millions of blogs and forums that are floating around in cyberspace. Virtually any topic of interest can be researched on the internet, many of these pages as opinion pages from people around the world. Joining a blog can be very beneficial not only to learn more about a particular topic or topics, but also to gain different perspectives on a single topic. Blogging can also gain self recognition and can even lead to a career in journalism or even the creation of a film or of a best-selling novel.

Throughout the course of this semester I will be joining at least one, if not multiple, blogging community that discuss movies. My focus will primarily be on horror movies. I will watch a different horror film weekly and then write a review of my own opinions based on the movie. I will also look at other people’s blogs on these same movies and compare their ideas to my own ideas. Movie forums and blogs can be very beneficial to nearly everyone from a movie connoisseur, to a middle aged parent looking for an appropriate movie to rent for their adolescent child, to a young adult looking to be entertained on a Friday night. The reviews of others, although they can not be trusted completely, can often times give an accurate depiction of whether or not you, the watcher, will like or dislike the movie. Horror.com is an excellent site for movie blogging. Not only does this site provide individual movie reviews for many, many movies, it also has a forum where a member can post his or her opinion on any movie of his or her choosing. Horrormoviefans.com is also another excellent blogging website in regards to horror movies. This website categorizes their forums by “Horror Movie of the Week” and asks members to respond to the particular weekly film which was chosen. Members can even rate these movies, to give others an idea of how they thought the movie ranked in comparison to other horror films which they have seen. Used daily by millions to research anything you can imagine, Yahoo also has a movies section. Their movie section includes reviews of new movies by acclaimed critics, such as the Los Angeles Times and Entertainment Weekly. Yahoo’s movie section also includes an organized forum with member’s opinions and reviews of these movies.

I am going to attempt to be as least biased as possible in evaluating these movies. Even if I like a particular actor or director I am not going to let that influence my opinions in my blogs. I plan to evaluate each main character’s performance. I also plan to assess the plot of the movie and what audience the movie would be appropriate for. I will focus on the level of suspense that the movie offers and if I felt scared throughout it. After close evaluation of each of these aspects of my weekly movie, I will then compare my review to those reviews of others. I will look to see if my review was biased in comparison to others or if it was too harsh, or maybe not harsh enough. I hope to make an impact on those who read my blogs. I look forward to helping others find movies that they may enjoy and also gaining new perspectives on movies. I also hope that through these forums that I will discover many movies that I may not have ever heard of or watched.

  1. I recommend a mixture of old and new movies, to make it easier to do the reviews. You know, one classic, one recently released thriller, just to mix it up. I look forward to reading your first review. Hopefully you will introduce me to some movies that I will enjoy.
